Because of creation.
Why is there something rather than nothing? The simplest and oldest answer is still the best: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) Church is a place where we go to praise and thank God for his love and kindness in creating a good and beautiful world, including us!
Because of sin.
Sin is disobedience to God. Our first parents sinned against God, bringing his curse and judgment on this world. (Genesis 2-3) That is the reason for all the corruption and misery we experience. We all sin. We must confess our sins and seek God’s mercy to receive forgiveness, or we will face eternal punishment when he judges us in the end. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
Because of Jesus.
God always punishes sin. Jesus the Son of God became a man so that he could live a righteous life on this earth and then bear the punishment for sin – not his own sin, but the sins of his people! He rose from the dead on the third day, conquering death and hell. God promises that all who trust in him will be forgiven for their sins and will share in the hope of new life in Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
Because of heaven.
The first creation was good, but then it was ruined by evil. Now God’s people look forward to a new creation, where we will live forever with our savior Jesus Christ. But until we get there, we gather every week on Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead. At church we are reminded of the good news of salvation, we are refreshed by the hope of heaven, and we are encouraged to continue in faith and love for as long as we are on this earth. This happens because at church we are not just meeting with each other; we are meeting with and worshiping our God! (Psalm 122:1) b11ae100
